Train Models Lovers: Model Railroaders - Model Railroading
Model Railroaders
Model railroading can be a family hobby or it can be the focused passion of any one person. As a family hobby it is a very enjoyable pastime where parents and children can work together, re-creating miniature worlds that can be based on an existing railroad or one from a bygone era.For the really committed individual working alone it can be a time consuming, often expensive, and often frustrating hobby.
The trains used in model railroading are not merely toys. Rather, they are carefully detailed, scaled down models of current real-life locomotives and rolling stock or, more usually, models of those from important railroads in railroad history.
Not only does a model railroader spend time and money on setting up tracks and ancillary equipment for their chosen trains but also spend considerable time and money on building realistic landscapes to provide an authentic setting for their model railroad.
Model Railroading
Model railroading, of all the many model hobbies that thousands of people become passionately involved in, provides the most demanding skills. It also has wide international appeal, For instance many modelers in the USA choose to model the early beginnings of railroading which followed the development of the uses of steam for industrial uses in Great Britain while modelers in Europe and the Far East are developing layouts of railroad sections of the USA from the great western railroads to the eastern mountain railroads.
If you are considering joining the host of model railroad collectors across the world, there are many factors you need to consider before getting started.
The first critical question is what amount of space you have to work with? If your potential layout space is limited to say a 3 foot by 6 foot area you will probably have to consider one of the small scales like z or n scale. If your house has a larger space like part of a basement or attic then layouts for HO or O scale will be more appropriate.
You also need to consider your budget. Because you have the space doesnt mean you have a budget that can afford to do the scale you have chosen. You need to be well aware of the price tag that your new hobby is likely to entail. In general the farther to either side of HO scale railroading you get the more expensive your layout costs become.
The next major decision you need to make is that of what era of railroading you want to model. Fortunately for model railroaders today most of the manufacturers of trains and accessories can offer a range of different time periods for you to model your railroad layout on. From the earliest of steam trains right through to the most modern diesel locomotives are available from the model train manufacturers.
