USA, Europe and Britain are the major areas where model train collecting occurs. However each of these areas use different scale standards, much of which is based on historical developments, and even on historical mistakes! USA The National Model Railroad Association, NMRA, began to standardize model railway scales more than 65 years ago. NMRA standards are used extensively throughout North America and also by some special interest groups throughout the world modeling US railways. In general, the NMRA and NEM standards are compatible, but in some aspects, the standards specified by these two bodies are less compatible. Some of the NMRA scale standards provide alternative specifications by defining some scales either in millimeters or in inches.
